THE NP HOTEL
NORTHERN PACIFIC HOTEL, EASTON
Another busy day on the hill. The NP Hotel at Easton is the perfect resting place
for your tired engine crews. The Northern Pacific built this hotel just across from
the roundhouse at Easton, at the base of Stampede Pass, on their mainline route over
the Cascade Mountains of Washington.
I was inspired by the photo in Charles Wood's NP Pictorial (page 84). I had
looked at it for years thinking it would make a great model, but the task of cutting
out all those windows was just too daunting.
Then I bought Builders In Scale and inherited a laser-cutter. Perfect tool for the job.
NP historian Jim Fredrickson shared a floor plan from his collection. And I went to work-
I knew I wanted more in my model than just your regular generic cut-and-paste laser kit.
So I kept pushing it. Starting with a bunch of Grandt Line Products I added some of
our own white metal detail parts (from Builders In Scale), as well as some laser-cut
Venitian blinds and lace curtains. Interior wall partitions, floors, and even the
stairs are included. The porches and roof are covered with laser-cut self-adhesive
shake shingles and it all rests on a cast Hydrocal CCC stone foundation.
I had assumed the building was long gone as is the roundhouse and other facilities.
To my amazement I learned it's still standing. A lot worse for wear with "new" vinyl
windows placed over the original boarded-over locations. I finished my model off with
the NP two-tone cream over brown paint job though I suspect the original was simply painted
white (as it roughly is today). I then placed my model on a small diorama adding standard
scenery (from Woodland Scenics)- though not included.
The kit includes step-by-step instructions with full-size drawings and templates.
There's no reason to sit around for years like I did thinking someday I should build a
model of this great structure- Order yours today!

THE PROTOTYPE TODAY!
I've always assumed the building was long gone recalling nothing like it near the tracks
where I thought it was in past visits, though I never specifically looked until this summer (2006). I couldn't believe it!
Definately a little worse for wear but still standing. And still there, worse for wear, today in 2024.
Another was located in Paridise, Mont., called the Cliff House, as it was located on a steep
bank behind the 21-stall roundhouse. The model was also modified to represent another larger hotel in town there
by unfolding it, creating a flat-faced model.
Still another modification, lengthing it and rearranging the kitchen are creates the on in Lester, Wash. Another
mod of the design did justice to the Masons Lodge in Skykomish, Wash. on the GN.
So do not dismiss this as being only a Northern Pacific model.

You can see the old windows, boarded up and "new" ones cut in.

I'm certain it's been moved. The old photo shows a car part on this side.

There's a new side entrance but it looks like it was added long ago.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION - for this model
ON-LINE HOW TO CLINICS
HOW TO CLINICS
Here are a bunch of my on-line how to work with Hydrocal mini-clinics.
Each kit includes specific instructions of course- and there are lots of ways
to do things, but here are my thoughts, tips and techniques.
Coloring BRICK
My traditional techniques for coloring and mortaring brick.
Coloring STONE
With a little practice you can color realistic stone walls. Here's how I do it.
What are we going to do now that Testors/Floquil has dropped their Flo-Stains?
Coloring CONCRETE
A little gray ink wash and some colorants. It's not that difficult.
SCRATCH-BUILDING STOCK
Standard Common Brick- fine
If you like to scratch-build or just want to practice before you do, check out my
stock castings. These are the same building blocks I use to create my kits.
Hand-Carved Stone-
I have three different grades available. Use as retaining walls, cut them up
for foundations, or make whole new buildings.
Cinder Block Wall
Mix it up a bit and you'll have an even more interesting building.
Concrete Retaining Wall
Whole 4" x 8" panels of the stuff. Use them for retaining walls, foundations,
even make complete buildings like I have.
COMPLEMENTARY KITS
NP 90 ft. Round House
A Northern Pacific Standard Plan, the ultimate "railroad" model.
NP Signal Tower
Another Northern Pacific prototype structure.
NP Freight House
Actually, a railroad storage house often found near the roundhouse.
