Large and small these fruit packing and
storage houses would make a very interesting, and busy, industry on your
layout. I first became interested in these noting a variety in the background of
my train watching in central Washington. There were modern concrete tilt-ups,
massive poured concrete ones, old brick and stone... Eventually I figured I'd
better make some models of them.
There are three versions of the Apple Store Houses.
A single-story brick, a single-story concrete, or a two-story brick over
concrete structure for those bumper crop years.
I've taken the same three versions of apple houses and
converted them into Orange Packing Houses by simply changing out the
color artwork. So if your railroad runs to the south here is the line side
industry you've been waiting for.
If the apple or orange houses are too big for your layout but
you are still interested in modeling this great line side industry I have just
the models for you. I'm calling the group the Fruit Row Complex. They include
the following, available seperately in the pairs listed, or buy all six in one
kit and save a little money.
The orchard started off with the cobblestone Cherry House
and soon added a small brick office building. Next they added the concrete Pear
House and corrugated metal Peach Shed addtion. Finally, the cinder block
Potato House was built along with its wooden covered sorting platform.
Unfortuantely, these models were unavailable for quite a
while, however, we are bringing them back very soon. Please feel free to
reserve yours today! Just send me and e-mail and I'll put you on the list.

Each kit includes specific instructions of course- and there are lots of ways
to do things, but here are my thoughts, tips and techniques.
Coloring BRICK
My traditional techniques for coloring and mortaring brick.
Coloring STONE
With a little practice you can color realistic stone walls too. Here's how I do it.
What are we going to do now that Testors/Floquil has dropped their Flo-Stains?
