I have created a full line of Concrete retaining walls, bridge abutments,
piers, tunnel portals and castings sets based on constructions techniques
that mimic real-life construction. I figured the best way to get those subtle
board impressions was to build the scale forms up just like the real thing.
It worked! We have some very realistic scale models to offer you. If you are
serious about your modeling this is the place for you.
Here's one of my tall concrete bridge piers.
Looks pretty good, hun? The best thing about this I colored it in about two
minutes without even trying! You can too. It's simple. We'll just brush on a
simple ink wash. That's a few drops of black India ink in some tap water
slapped on with a cheap 1" brush vertically. Then lightly dry brush on some
earth tone Artist's dry pigments, and we're done.

CONCRETE RETAINING WALLS
We start off the concrete series with the basic building blocks- my cast
concrete retaining wall stocks. Shown above is my CRW-M. It is about 4" tall
by 8" wide and about 3/32" thick. It is just perfect for building all sorts of
stuff. I used 3/32" stripwood to build up my original form from which the
castings have picked up their texture. This mimics about an eight inch board
in HO scale.
I also offer a vertical version of the concrete stock , my CRW-fV, but
please note that it is constructed with a smaller 1/16" stripwood plank
impression. For taller projects you can stack and glue the CRW-M panels together.
I do it all the time.

CAST CONCRETE TUNNEL PORTALS
I've had lots of fun with these. Starting off with the Milwaukee Railroad I
created a narrow 16 ft. wide opening for their crossing of the Bitterroots over
St. Paul Pass.
I went one step further than the other guys and created 3 inch long interior
castings, yes, complete with the forming board textures, so you can model the
interior. Extra liners sets are availiable so you can go in as far as you like!
Noting that these narrow portals can only be used for straight track I then
made a larger version with an 18 ft. wide opening for curved track.
Then I turned my attention to the Great Northern's Original Cascade Tunnel. I
actually drove up one day (not like a motocycle ride up Stevens Pass on a warm
July afternoon is any both!) and I measured the real thing. I did modify it a
bit by using the 18 ft. opening but I took all efforts to recreate this famous
original to exacting scale.

I have also been working on GN's downtown Seattle double-track tunnel. And there
are generic versions, wide and narrow of both width openings available.
Why fool around? Use the best! Use C. C. Crow's.

Steve Depolo's Milwaukee Road layout featured this bridge built by Rick Xavier.
I helped by constructing the concrete abutments, piers and footings. Steve quit
modeling the Milwaukee so the bridge hide in my basement for awhile, then it was
displaced by Builders In Scale. Steve took it back and is now using it on his Sn3
layout. Crazy world isn't it?
